New Britain, CT Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

Sec. 15-72(a) applies notwithstanding any other provision of the Code and limits any motor or other vehicle weighing over 10,000 pounds gross, or exceeding 30 feet in length or 8 feet in height, to 30 minutes on a city street, unless the vehicle is commercially engaged during that time; violating this cap carries a $250 fine per occurrence. Sec. 15-72(b) separately bans parking any commercial vehicle overnight on any city street at all, with a $25 fine per violation. The ordinance defines commercial vehicle broadly as any motor vehicle, including tow vehicles and flatbed tow vehicles, used in whole or in part in conjunction with or in furtherance of a commercial enterprise, whatever registration plate it carries and whether or not it displays a business name or advertisement.

Enforcement follows the same citation process as other parking violations: under Sec. 15-75, an officer attaches a notice stating the time, place and nature of the violation, and the registered owner has seven days to pay the fine set for the offense or contest it before the parking ticket appeals board, with the penalty tripling if the owner misses that window. A vehicle with three or more delinquent, unpaid citations, whether for oversized parking or overnight commercial parking, can be booted or towed under Sec. 15-76, and release requires paying towing, storage, a $35 booting fee, and all outstanding parking fines under Sec. 15-78.
