Columbus, OH Frost Depth & Snow Load: Frost Line Depth (2026)

Ohio's residential code leaves the frost line depth column empty and directs each jurisdiction to fill it in. Columbus answers in Construction Industry Communication #09, a memorandum from the Chief Building Official whose whole purpose is to supply the additional criteria established by the Department of Building and Zoning Services. Its completed Table R301.2(1) gives a frost line depth of 32 inches. That is shallower than most of the Ohio cities we cover, Toledo is 36 inches and Cleveland requires 36 inches for houses, which tracks Columbus sitting further south. The same table records weathering as Severe, seismic design category B, an air freezing index of 1048 and a mean annual temperature of 52.6. The code's own footnote is worth reading alongside the number: the frost line depth may require deeper footings than the model figure indicates, so 32 inches is a minimum rather than a guarantee for every site.
