Florissant, MO Garage & Yard Sales: Frequency, Duration & Permits (2026)

085(A)(12) of the Florissant Zoning Code lists outdoor and partially outdoor sales, including garage sales, estate sales, moving sales and yard sales, as a use permitted in the "R-1" Single-Family Dwelling District when run by an individual, church, charitable, benevolent, religious or fraternal organization. Before setting up, the seller must obtain a permit from the Director of Finance or a designated representative; the Section does not itself state a fee, so applicants confirm the amount when they apply. Two limits define how often a household can hold a sale: no single sale may run more than two days within any seven-day period, and no address may host more than two garage sale events in a calendar year.

The Code also controls where the merchandise sits: the sale must be held behind the building line, or behind the frontmost portion of the building if that line is closer to the street, so tables and racks cannot spill into the front yard toward the road. Because this use regulation sits inside the R-1 district's use list rather than a stand-alone garage sale ordinance, it travels with the rest of the district's requirements, including the R-1 fence, yard and permit provisions found in the same Section.

A resident who wants to hold more than two sales in a year, or who wants to sell from the front of the lot, has no administrative variance built into this Section and would need to seek relief through the City's general zoning variance process before the Board of Adjustment.
