3, subject only to the exception that smoke detectors already tied into a building fire alarm system can substitute for standalone alarms. 2 Interconnection requires that where more than one smoke alarm is required within a single dwelling or sleeping unit, all of them must be wired or, if listed as wireless, linked so that one activating sounds every alarm in the unit, loud enough to be heard in every bedroom with the doors closed; interconnection is not required in buildings that are not undergoing alteration, repair or construction, and existing alarms don't have to be interconnected retroactively unless the work removes interior wall or ceiling finishes.

3 Power Source requires a single-station alarm to draw its primary power from commercial building wiring plus a battery backup, with alarms that have integral strobes and no battery backup connected instead to an emergency electrical system; every alarm must chirp a low-battery signal, and the wiring must be permanent, without any disconnect switch beyond normal overcurrent protection. Purely battery-powered alarms are allowed in existing buildings with no construction underway, in buildings with no commercial power source, or in areas being altered without exposing wall or ceiling framing.
