Lewisville, TX Garage & Yard Sales: Frequency, Duration & Permits (2026)

Article VI of Chapter 7, Occasional Sales, is Lewisville's garage sale ordinance. It defines an 'occasional sale' as any retail sale of tangible personal property out of a home, garage, carport, or patio (§ 7-201), and requires a permit from City Hall before holding one, at the fee set in section 2-201 (§ 7-202). A resident who is not in the business of retail selling may hold no more than two occasional sales during any 12-month period (§ 7-203). Each sale is capped at three consecutive calendar days (§ 7-205), and the merchandise sold on the property must belong to the owner or lessee of the premises at the time of sale and be confined to the garage, patio, or carport, not spread across the yard or curb (§ 7-204).

Only new merchandise acquired solely for resale is barred; sellers may offer their own used household goods (§ 7-207). Advertising is limited to a single on-site sign no larger than two square feet, and any sign posted away from the sale address is illegal (§ 7-206). Because the two-sale annual cap and three-day duration limit come straight from the city's 1990 Code, the restrictions apply the same way whether the sale is billed as a garage, yard, estate, or moving sale, so long as it happens out of a residential home, garage, carport, or patio.
