Section 3-62 sets a hard numeric ceiling: a person may keep, or allow to be kept, on residentially zoned premises not more than a total of six individual animals, counted per individual dwelling unit on the lot. Those six can be any composite of the species the section lists: dogs three or more months old, cats three or more months old, rabbits three or more months old, ferrets three or more months old, or one potbellied pig three or more months old that otherwise meets the chapter's potbellied pig requirements.

Because the count only applies to animals three months or older, a litter of young puppies or kittens doesn't push a household over the limit until they age past that threshold. The section allows the cap to be exceeded only where the Code otherwise specifically permits it, so households can't self-authorize more animals; any additional allowance has to come from another provision of the Code. The limit sits in Article III, Miscellaneous, alongside Section 3-61's separate at-large restraint requirement and the chapter's prohibited- and regulated-animal permit system, meaning a household near the cap that also wants an exotic or agricultural animal has to check those companion sections before adding to its total.
