Ocala, FL Garage & Yard Sales: Frequency, Duration & Permits (2026)

Chapter 50, Article III of Ocala's Code of Ordinances governs garage sales. Sec. 50-101 defines a garage sale as a sale by a city resident of personal property, conducted only from a single-family residence or duplex, and only if no nonparticipating resident of the premises objects. Sec. 50-102 then sets the duration and frequency limits: the total sale period cannot exceed 48 consecutive hours, and sales may run only during daylight hours between sunrise and sunset. The same premises cannot host another garage sale more often than once every six months, unless title to the property has transferred to different residents who otherwise qualify to hold a sale.

Sec. 50-103 adds two further conditions: none of the personal property offered may be consigned from a merchant or other commercial entity licensed by any government agency, and the sale must be conducted so that it does not violate city ordinances protecting the safety, health and welfare of others nearby. Sec. 50-105 carves out an exception for rummage or similar sales run by charitable or religious organizations from non-residentially zoned property, which do not count as garage sales under the article, and the city may waive the personal-interest requirements for such sales proposed on residential property.
