Full Breakdown

Rowlett Code of Ordinances Sec. 2-601 allows residents to hold garage sales or other occasional sales of personal property without a business license, but caps them at three per 12-month period and three consecutive days each. Sales must happen on the seller's own property, be confined to the garage, patio, or yard, and can't include merchandise bought specifically for resale. The ordinance targets casual sellers: anyone who habitually sells goods at retail from home falls outside this exemption and needs a business license instead.

Violations & Fines

Violating the occasional-sale limits carries the city's general penalty under Sec. 1-13: a fine up to $500 per offense, with each day of an ongoing violation counted separately.
