Johnston County, NC Home Business: Customer Traffic Restrictions (2026)

Section 14-6 of the Johnston County Code sets the traffic ceiling for any home occupation operating in unincorporated Johnston County: item (5) bars the business from generating traffic, parking demand, sewage, or water use in greater volumes than would normally be expected from a residential use on that lot. The same section restricts the one business vehicle a home occupation may keep on site. That vehicle cannot exceed 14 feet in height, and its cargo area or work platform is capped at 14 feet in length; dump trucks, tractor-trailers, tankers, and wreckers cannot be used for a home occupation at all, regardless of size.

The county pairs the traffic cap with a nuisance standard: no equipment or process used in the home occupation may create noise, vibration, glare, fumes, or electrical interference detectable off the lot, and no products may be displayed where they are visible from the street. Together these standards keep client and delivery traffic, parking overflow, and vehicle storage at a scale a residential street was built to handle. A home occupation that draws heavier truck traffic, adds parking beyond what the dwelling would normally use, or keeps an oversized commercial vehicle on the lot is out of compliance even if it otherwise fits inside the 500-square-foot workspace cap, and planning staff can require the operator to seek a conditional permit from the board of adjustment or stop the use.
