Kendall County, IL Home Business: Customer Traffic Restrictions (2026)

Kendall County Code Section 36-973 governs home occupations run out of a dwelling in the unincorporated county's residential zoning districts. Subsection (4) caps vehicle trips at ten a day, counting every customer, delivery person and employee trip to and from the property combined; the county does not carve out separate counts for each category. Subsection (5) limits staffing to family members living on the premises plus one outside employee in all residential districts (an agricultural home occupation under Section 36-972 may add two outside workers instead).

Subsection (1) requires the business to operate entirely inside the dwelling and remain incidental and secondary to residential use. Subsection (7) bars mechanical equipment that produces obnoxious fumes or excessive noise and prohibits any noise, vibration, smoke, dust, odor, heat, glare or electrical disturbance perceptible at or beyond the lot line. Two use-specific caps interact with the traffic rule: music, craft and dance instruction is limited to one student at a time and eight students a day under Subsection (8), and a home salon may run only one station, whether a chair or nail table, under Subsection (9).

Subsection (6) still requires off-street parking under Article V, Division 2 for whatever traffic the trip cap allows. Exceeding the ten-trip cap or the instructional limits is not administratively waivable; it requires a variance from the Zoning Board of Appeals.
