Mebane, NC Home Business: Home Daycare (2026)

Mebane's Unified Development Ordinance treats a small home daycare, one serving five or fewer clients at a time, as an accessory use tacked onto a residential lot rather than a standalone commercial facility. Section 4-7.6(F) allows it in the R-20, R-15, R-12, R-10, R-8 and R-6 districts, and defines the service broadly enough to cover a childcare facility for five or fewer children, as defined under N.C.G.S. § 110-86, as well as adult day care for five or fewer adults provided more than two hours a day.

The use cannot operate between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., so overnight or very early care falls outside what the accessory-use standard allows. Any outdoor activity area for children must be enclosed by a security fence at least six feet high and kept outside the required road setback, and the lot has to have enough land to handle parking and loading for both the house and the daycare use. The operator still needs to satisfy every state licensing requirement that applies to the size and type of daycare being run.

Because a home daycare is layered on top of the home occupation category, it must also meet § 4-7.4(E)'s home occupation standards, including the 25 percent floor-area cap and the restriction on outside evidence of the business, which keeps a five-or-fewer daycare looking like an ordinary house from the street.
