Mebane, NC Parking Rules: RV & Boat Parking (2026)

Mebane's parking rules for residential yards draw a line between an RV sitting in a driveway and one being lived in. Section 4-2(B)(8) of the UDO lets a homeowner park a recreational vehicle in a residential driveway as an accessory use without a separate permit, but the same subsection flatly bars anyone from occupying that RV as a temporary or permanent dwelling while it sits there. A different rule in Section 6-5(A)(10) covers heavier vehicles more broadly: any vehicle rated over one ton, a category that reaches many pickup trucks, box trucks, and larger trailers used to haul boats, cannot be parked in a residential zoning district at all, whether on the street or on the property, unless it is loading or unloading, providing emergency home service, or tied to an existing legal nonconforming use, in which case it can only park on the nonconforming-use property itself, never on the street.

Section 6-5(A)(11) then points residents to Chapter 34 of the separate City Code for the City's specific rules on on-street parking or storage of certain vehicle types and oversized vehicles, which is where street-side boat, trailer, and RV parking restrictions live rather than in the UDO. Together the two UDO sections mean a resident's own RV can stay in the driveway, but a heavy truck, trailer, or oversized vehicle generally cannot sit in a residential yard or on the street outside a narrow set of exceptions the Zoning Administrator enforces.
