Mebane, NC Parking Rules: Overnight Parking (2026)

Section 34-165 of the Code of Ordinances, City of Mebane, North Carolina, lets the city designate specific streets, listed in Schedule II and adopted by reference into Chapter 34, where parking is prohibited overnight between 1:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., unless the schedule sets different hours for a particular block. The restriction only takes effect once the city has placed, erected or installed signs in each affected block giving notice of the ban; without a posted sign, the overnight restriction does not apply on that block.

The section carries one built-in exception: a vehicle parked between 1:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. on a restricted street is not in violation if its owner is actually at work in the building, or on the premises, in front of or near where the vehicle is parked. Mebane's parking rules generally are enforced under Section 34-161, which has a police officer or other designated city employee attach a notice to the violating vehicle, then requires the owner to pay a $5.00 civil penalty to the city clerk within ten days.

Missing that window adds a $10.00 late fee for payment within 30 days, or a further $15.00 on top of that if payment is not made within 30 days, for a maximum of $30.00 total. Unpaid penalties can be referred by the chief of police to the city attorney for collection as a civil claim rather than pursued as a criminal violation, since Section 34-161 expressly routes parking violations to the civil penalty track under G.S. 160A-175 rather than the criminal penalty in G.S. 14-4.
