Mebane, NC Fire Regulations: Fireworks (2026)

Mebane UDO Section 4-7.13(D) groups fireworks stands with Christmas tree lots, pumpkin patches, seafood stands and similar seasonal sales, and allows them only in the O&I, B-1, B-2 and B-3 districts. A stand cannot sit within 50 feet of a public street right-of-way, and the operator must provide enough off-street customer parking that the Zoning Administrator finds will not disrupt traffic or neighboring owners; access must come from a collector street or better. The permit runs no more than 45 days, and if the stand adjoins residentially-used or zoned property it cannot conduct business between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m.

Every structure must be portable and hauled away once the permit period ends; signage is limited to one sign per street frontage, no taller than four feet and no larger than 16 square feet, and that sign also comes down when the permit expires. Article 12 of the UDO separately defines a Fireworks Stand as a temporary outdoor stand for selling fireworks and similar combustion, explosion, deflagration or detonation items. Discharging fireworks is a separate question from selling them: the city's Code of Ordinances makes it unlawful to fire a gun, pistol or firecracker or other fireworks from a boat on the lake or from the shore at the Graham-Mebane Lake, a rule enforced by the lake warden under Section 24-213, though it does not apply beyond that city-owned lake property.
