Mebane, NC Fire Regulations: Smoke Detectors (2026)

Mebane's Minimum Housing Code treats roominghouses and similar shared-occupancy buildings under a separate article of standards layered on top of the general dwelling rules in Sec. 6-140. Sec. 6-143(a) makes every minimum-housing standard applicable to roominghouses and to any person who operates one or lets a room to another. Two of the roominghouse-specific standards concern fire detection directly. Sec. 6-143(7) requires that in any roominghouse whose fossil-fuel heating system exceeds 250,000 B.T.U. of capacity, the furnace room itself must be enclosed in material rated for at least one hour of fire protection, and a smoke detector must be installed inside that furnace room.

Sec. 6-143(8) separately requires a smoke detector in every public hallway of the roominghouse, positioned within 15 feet of each individual rooming unit's door, and specifies the detector's primary power source must come from the building's house electrical current rather than battery power alone. Enforcement runs through the same director of inspections who administers the rest of the Minimum Housing Code: Sec. 6-147(d) directs city fire and police department employees to report any building suspected of being unfit for human habitation, which covers a roominghouse missing its required detectors, and the inspector can order corrections under the hearing procedure in Sec.

6-149. Because Sec. 6-143 incorporates all of Sec. 6-140's minimum standards, a roominghouse operator who fails to maintain the furnace-room or hallway detectors is also out of compliance with the building's overall fitness-for-habitation standard, enforced with the same misdemeanor penalty under G.S. 14-4 set out in Sec. 6-135(b) for the rest of Article V.
