Blue Earth County, MN Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Section 24-326(a)(6) of the Blue Earth County Code limits signage for a Level I home occupation to one sign of one and one-half square feet, which must be non-illuminated and attached to the wall of the dwelling. Section 24-326(b)(5) sets a separate, larger allowance for a Level II home occupation: a single sign up to 32 square feet, also non-illuminated, but it can sit anywhere on the property rather than attached to the dwelling. Both limits track the county's broader sign exemption list in section 24-311(d), which separately exempts a Level I home occupation sign, non-illuminated, attached to the wall of a dwelling, and not exceeding one and one-half square feet in area from the sign permit requirement altogether, at section 24-311(d)(12); a Level II home occupation sign of up to 32 square feet is instead grouped with other permitted on-premises signage for the A, C, RR and RT districts in section 24-311(h)(1)c.

Neither Level I nor Level II home occupation signage can be illuminated in a way beyond the outright ban on flashing or rotating illumination that applies to every sign in the county under section 24-311(e)(5) and (10).
