Champaign, IL Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Sec. 37-167(h) of Champaign's zoning code directly addresses home business signage: "No advertising sign, other than a non-illuminated sign, not exceeding one (1) square foot in total face area shall be displayed in connection with a home occupation. " That one-square-foot limit is far smaller than the signage allowed for commercial uses elsewhere in the Code, reflecting the home occupation's status as an accessory use that must not disrupt the residential character of the neighborhood. The same subsection forecloses any illuminated signage outright, so a lit business sign of any size is not permitted for a home occupation regardless of square footage.

This signage cap sits alongside Sec. 37-167(f) and (g), which separately bar displaying goods or services visible from outside the building and prohibit outdoor storage of any equipment, merchandise, or materials connected with the occupation. Read together, these subsections mean a home business in Champaign can identify itself with, at most, a single small placard-sized sign at the property and cannot use banners, window displays, lit signs, or additional yard signs to advertise. Any sign exceeding the one-square-foot cap, or any illuminated sign, converts the use into a nonconforming home occupation subject to code enforcement rather than a minor sign infraction alone.
