Fitchburg treats a home occupation sign as a distinct, narrowly defined category inside its sign ordinance rather than folding it into ordinary business signage. Section 26-4(12) exempts home occupation signs which direct attention to a home occupation allowed on the premises under chapter 22, pertaining to zoning, from the sign permit requirements of Chapter 26, but only within tight limits: the sign shall not exceed three square feet in area and shall be attached to the residential building in which a home occupation is permitted.

That ties the signage allowance directly to the underlying zoning approval in § 22-55(2), which separately states that signage for the vocational activity will be governed by the sign ordinance rather than setting its own size limit. In practice this means a resident running a permitted home occupation, such as a tutoring service, craft business or home office, can post a small identification sign without applying for the sign permit that Section 26-31 otherwise requires for every sign in the city, so long as the sign stays under three square feet and is mounted to the house itself rather than freestanding in the yard.

A detached yard sign, a sign larger than three square feet, or a sign advertising an activity that does not itself qualify as a permitted home occupation under § 22-55(2) falls outside the exemption and needs a standard sign permit application to the zoning administrator, including a scale drawing and site map, before it can go up.
