Freehold Township, NJ Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Section 190-118 governs home office uses township-wide, and its signage restriction is one of the strictest pieces of the section. Subsection B(1)(c) states there shall be no external display of goods, no outdoor activity or storage of any kind, including the assembling or staging of workers or equipment even if that equipment is kept elsewhere, and no on-premises advertising, including but not limited to signs. That means a home business cannot post a yard sign, door plaque, or any other on-site marker identifying the business to passersby.

Subsection B(1)(d) extends the restriction to off-site advertising as well: the street address of the home cannot be listed in advertising done through signs, billboards, newspapers, commercial circulars, radio, television, telephone books or leaflets. The code draws a narrow line for legitimate business documentation, however: this is not construed to prohibit using the home address on business cards or catalogs, or in a single-line listing in the white or yellow pages of the phone book. Read against the rest of Section 190-118, the sign ban fits the section's overall purpose, keeping a home office invisible from the street so that a residential zoning district's atmosphere is not compromised by a business presence.
