Long Branch, NJ Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Long Branch's sign chapter regulates residential-zone signage in § 284-6, covering the R-1 through R-7 zoning districts. Alongside the rule for one- and two-family dwellings (a 10-by-18-inch identification sign per unit), the same subsection addresses home businesses: a home professional office in the residential zones where such offices are permitted may erect one illuminated wall or ground identification sign, provided the sign does not exceed 3 square feet in area on either side, and any ground-mounted version of that sign is not more than 2 feet in height above ground level.

The section allows only one such sign per home occupation; there is no allowance to combine a wall sign and a ground sign for the same home business. Because the sign may be illuminated, a home professional such as a lawyer or accountant working from a residence can light the sign at night, but the illumination does not lift the 3-square-foot area cap or the 2-foot height limit for a ground version. The permission for a home professional office sign only applies where the underlying home occupation use is itself permitted under Chapter 345's zoning use tables for that residential district; the sign rule does not independently authorize a home business that zoning does not otherwise allow.

Applications for a sign permit under § 284-15 must still be filed with the required fee under § 284-17 even for a sign this small, since the exemption list in § 284-4 does not cover residential district identification signs.
