Lake Charles, LA Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

The zoning ordinance treats a home occupation's signage as a narrow exception to the rule that a home business must otherwise stay invisible from the street. Sec. 24-5-207(4)(b) requires the business itself to be conducted entirely inside the enclosed principal structure and not be visible from any residential structure or public way, but subsection (4)(i) carves out one specific allowance: a single non-illuminated name plate. That plate cannot exceed one square foot if it is a freestanding or ground-mounted sign, or two square feet if it is attached and mounted directly on the house.

No other advertising is permitted. The name plate cannot be illuminated internally or externally, and the ordinance's broader home-occupation limitations reinforce the restriction: subsection (4)(a) bars displaying or selling stock in trade on the premises, and subsection (4)(g) prohibits any home occupation that is noxious, offensive, or hazardous because of glare or other emissions, which forecloses a lit sign even if it were otherwise sized correctly. A banner, sandwich board, vehicle-mounted advertisement, or illuminated sign for a home business is not a name plate and does not fall within the exception, regardless of its size.

A sign that exceeds the one- or two-square-foot cap, or any illuminated signage advertising a home occupation, is a zoning violation enforced under Sec. 24-6-102: a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of $10 to $250 or up to 30 days in jail for each day the sign remains, or an administrative citation carrying a civil fine of up to $500 per offense.
