Portage County, WI Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Sec. 7.1.2(1)(b)8.b of the Portage County Zoning ordinance permits one sign per parcel to advertise a customary home occupation or professional office. The sign may be placed at the right-of-way line, cannot exceed six square feet in gross area, and cannot exceed eight feet in height. Illumination is allowed, but flashing or intermittent lighting is specifically prohibited. This home-business sign allowance sits within a broader sign-use list for the R2 Single Family Residence District, which separately permits directory signs, for-sale/rent/lease/trade signs up to six square feet (or more in qualifying subdivisions), and signage for churches, schools and similar institutions, each with its own size and placement limits under Sec.

7.1.2(1)(b)8. The same six-square-foot, eight-foot-height home occupation sign standard is cross-referenced from agricultural districts as well, for example the A4 General Agricultural District's sign list at Sec. 7.1.3(1)(b)15.g, which allows one sign per parcel for a customary home occupation or professional office under the same limits. Any sign placed within the highway vision clearance triangle established under Sec. 7.1.6(6) must still comply with that separate clearance rule.
