Pottstown, PA Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Pottstown's Zoning Code treats a home business sign as part of the home occupation approval, not a separate application. Section 504 splits home occupations into no-impact (permitted as of right) and major-impact (a conditional use before Borough Council). Among the no-impact qualifying conditions in Section 504(2), subsection Q sets the sign allowance: one sign, no larger than two square feet, that otherwise complies with Chapter 27, Part 7's general sign rules on materials, illumination and placement. That size threshold lines up with the separate exemption in Section 706(14), which excuses 'home occupation signs smaller than two square feet' from needing a standalone sign permit and from counting toward the property's overall sign allowance.

The home occupation itself is a different matter: Section 504(4) requires every home occupation to register with the Department of Licensing and Inspections within six months of the operative ordinance date and to hold a permit before operating, with a fee set periodically by Borough Council resolution. A single dwelling may host only one home occupation at a time under Section 504(2)(N), so a household cannot post separate two-square-foot signs for multiple home enterprises. No-impact home occupations must otherwise stay invisible from the street, meaning no exterior display of goods, lighting or inventory beyond the permitted sign itself.

The Department of Licensing and Inspections can revoke a home occupation permit outright for noncompliance with Section 504, which puts an oversized or noncompliant sign at risk of triggering a review of the whole home business, not just the signage.
