Rochester prohibits commercial signage for home occupations in residential zones. No exterior evidence of the business is permitted. The residential character of the property and neighborhood must be fully maintained.
The zoning code requires home occupations to have no visible exterior indication of business activity. Signs, banners, window displays, and illuminated advertising are all prohibited in residential districts for home businesses. A small nameplate with the occupant's name may be permitted but cannot advertise a business. Sign violations are enforced by the Department of Environmental Services.
Unauthorized business signs are subject to removal notices with 7-day compliance deadlines. Fines of $50β$200 per sign per day apply for non-compliance. Signs may be removed by the county after the deadline.
