Home occupation signage in Salt Lake City is highly restricted under Zoning Code §21A.36.030. Only ONE non-illuminated, flat-mounted sign up to 2 square feet is permitted on the dwelling.
SLC Zoning Ordinance §21A.36.030 (Home Occupations) allows a home-based business only as an accessory use to the dwelling. Signage rules: one sign only, maximum 2 square feet in area, must be flat-mounted to the building wall (no freestanding yard signs), non-illuminated, and must display only the name of the occupant and/or business. No flashing, neon, or electronic signs. The home must maintain a residential appearance — no exterior evidence of the business beyond the permitted sign. Window signs advertising the business are prohibited. These restrictions apply in all residential zones (R-1, R-2, RMF, etc.). Violation is a civil zoning infraction with fines and possible home occupation license revocation.
Civil zoning penalty: $100 first offense, $200 second, $500+ continuing. Repeat violations: home occupation permit revocation under §21A.36.030(E).
