St. Peters, MO Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Section 405.380(A)(5) of the St. Peters Municipal Code is written broadly: in no way may the appearance of the residence be altered or constructed so that it differs from its residential character, whether through colors, materials, construction, lighting, signs, or the emission of sounds, noises, or vibrations. Signs sit in the same list as paint colors and construction changes, so a home business cannot post a commercial sign, even a small one, without changing the home's residential character in violation of this subsection. Subsection (A)(4) reinforces the point from a different angle, requiring that the activities of the home-based work not be visible from any adjoining street at all, which reaches beyond signage to cover displays, equipment, and outdoor work areas.

Subsection (A)(7) adds that no storage or display of materials, goods, supplies, or equipment related to the home-based work may be visible from outside any structure on the property. Together, these three provisions leave no room for exterior advertising, window displays, or yard signs identifying a home occupation in the City of St. Peters, Missouri; any signage has to be limited to what is already allowed for a purely residential property under the City's separate sign regulations.
