Tangipahoa Parish, LA Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Sec. 4-111 of the parish sign code governs signage in areas zoned residential. Under subsection (1)'s general requirements, signs in residential districts are limited to one wall-mounted sign detailing a home occupation, and that sign cannot exceed two square feet in area. Subsection (2)a repeats and tightens the standard for home occupation signs specifically: one nonilluminated sign is permitted per home occupation, its display surface area cannot exceed two square feet, and it must be mounted flat against the wall of the building in which the home occupation is conducted, or flat against the wall of a principal structure.

Because the sign must be nonilluminated, none of the lighting allowances available to commercial signs under Sec. 4-80 apply to a home occupation sign. The same section, Sec. 4-111(2)b and c, separately regulates permanent subdivision entrance signs (capped at 200 square feet) and signs for group residential and nonresidential institutional uses (capped at 20 square feet per street entrance), but neither of those categories covers a home-based business; a resident running a home occupation is confined to the two-square-foot, wall-mounted, unlit sign standard. Any sign exceeding those limits, or that is freestanding rather than wall-mounted, falls outside the residential-district sign allowance entirely.
