Walker County, GA Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Walker County's zoning definitions, § 22-115, allow a home occupation in any residential zone only if it meets 8 conditions, and subsection (4) governs advertising. No advertisement of any type is allowed for the home occupation on the premises except a single identifying sign, and that sign cannot be illuminated and cannot exceed 2 square feet in area. The code goes further and specifically lists the sign types it will not allow in place of that one identifying sign: mailbox signs or nameplates, window signs, portable signs, awning signs, banners, and balloon signs are all named as prohibited.

Because the sign limit is one of the conditions that defines a home occupation in the first place, a home business that posts an illuminated sign, more than one sign, or a sign larger than 2 square feet stops meeting the § 22-115 definition and is treated as an unpermitted commercial use rather than a lawful home occupation. The Planning Director enforces the standard, and it applies the same way in every residential zone the code allows a home occupation, A-1, R-A, R-1, R-2 and R-3, without a separate sign permit process carved out for home-based businesses.

The same subsection also sits next to the section's other conditions, which keep the home occupation clearly incidental to the residence and bar outside employees, so a sign violation often surfaces alongside other home occupation problems during a single zoning review.
