Walworth County, WI Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Section 74-45 of the Walworth County Code sets the sign allowance for a minor home occupation or professional home office at two square feet, tucked into the same list of fifteen numbered restrictions that governs floor area, staffing, and on-site activity for occupations like a home office, data processing, telephone answering, direct sale product distribution such as Amway or Tupperware, dressmaking, tailoring, jewelry making, tutoring, music lessons, and computer programming. The two-square-foot cap sits alongside subsection (2), which limits the occupation to 25 percent of the area of any floor, subsection (6), which bars nonresident employees and employee vehicles, and subsection (7), which forbids on-site retail sales or display areas, so the sign is meant to be no larger than a modest nameplate rather than a business marquee visible from the road.

The ordinance offers no separate variance process for a larger home business sign; a homeowner who wants bigger signage would need a different, non-home-occupation zoning classification and its own conditional use review under division 4 of chapter 74. Walworth County Land Use and Resource Management administers the standard, and the County Zoning Administrator issues the notice of violation required under § 74-46, which must state the property owner's name, the physical location of the violation, and the section violated, before penalties attach to a first offense.
