Wichita, KS Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Wichita Unified Zoning Code is restrictive on home-occupation signage to preserve residential character. No exterior sign that identifies the home business by name, logo, services, hours, or phone number is permitted in any residential district (SF, TF, or MF). The only sign allowed at a residence is a single nameplate not exceeding 2 square feet, attached flat to the dwelling, displaying only the resident name and street address. Illumination of any kind is prohibited. Window signs visible from the street, sandwich boards, vehicle wraps parked in the driveway primarily for advertising, and feather flags are all considered violations of the home occupation standards. A vehicle used for business that displays the company name and is parked overnight in the driveway is generally allowed if it is a standard-sized passenger or light commercial vehicle and not used as a permanent display. Real estate signs, political signs, garage sale signs, and contractor signs are governed under separate sign code sections with their own size and duration limits. Violations are enforced by the Office of Central Inspection through notice and fines.
