Warrick County, IN Landscaping Rules: Composting (2026)

Warrick County Code Chapter 136 regulates collection, delivery, and processing of solid waste and recyclables for the county, administered through the Warrick County Solid Waste Management District. Section 136.01 defines ACCEPTABLE WASTE to expressly include garbage, rubbish, household appliances, yard waste, demolition and construction debris, and inert fill generated by residences, institutions, and businesses in the county, while excluding PROHIBITED WASTE such as hazardous waste, industrial waste, biomedical waste, dead animals, asphalt, and vehicles. Section 136.02(A) generally requires acceptable waste to be delivered to the District's designated facility, the transfer station at 1111 S.

Pelzer Road in Boonville, in accordance with rules set by the Board of Commissioners or the District. Section 136.02(B) carves out a specific exception for yard waste: notwithstanding the delivery requirement, residents may accumulate yard waste on their own residential property for composting purposes, provided the pile is managed so it does not create odor, harbor rodents, or become a public nuisance. The same subsection lets yard waste instead be collected commercially through the District's curbside waste and recycling pickup program if a resident prefers not to compost on site.

No permit, registration, or bin specification is written into § 136.02 for a residential compost pile; the only standard the county code imposes is the odor, rodent, and nuisance condition.
