Dallas Code Section 18-13 prohibits allowing weeds or grass to exceed 12 inches on any occupied or unoccupied premises. The city may mow at the owner's expense and lien the property if the violation is not corrected.
Section 18-13 of the Dallas Code makes it an offense for an owner, occupant, or person in control of occupied or unoccupied premises to permit weeds or grass to grow to a height greater than 12 inches. Premises includes the lot plus front or side parkway between the property line or sidewalk and the curb, and the rear or side parkway between the property line and the center line of an adjacent alley. It is a defense to prosecution that weeds and grass are maintained at or below 12 inches within 100 feet of the property perimeter and have been mulched, raked, or composted in an approved manner. Section 18-14 further requires owners to prevent vegetation from becoming a nuisance or fire hazard. Code Compliance enforces these standards and complaints can be filed through Dallas 311.
Violations carry fines under Section 18-16. The city may abate the condition at the owner's expense and place a lien on the property. Repeat violations result in escalating fines.
