Denton Code Section 17-40 requires property owners to keep grass and weeds below 12 inches on improved lots and below 18 inches on unimproved lots. Violations receive a written notice with 10 days to comply. The city may abate and lien the property for mowing costs.
Section 17-40 of the Denton Code of Ordinances governs vegetation maintenance on all properties within city limits. Grass, weeds, and rank vegetation on improved residential or commercial lots must not exceed 12 inches in height. Unimproved (vacant) lots have an 18-inch threshold. When a violation is confirmed, Community Improvement Services issues a written notice giving the property owner 10 days to cut the vegetation. If the owner fails to comply, the city may contract the mowing and place a lien on the property for the cost of abatement plus administrative fees. Each day of continued violation after the notice period constitutes a separate offense. The city operates a seasonal proactive mowing enforcement program from April through October when growth is heaviest. Denton also runs an Adopt-a-Block volunteer program for neighborhood cleanup. Complaints can be filed online through the Denton 311 portal or by calling (940) 349-8700. Properties adjacent to UNT and TWU campuses and rental-heavy areas near the downtown square see the highest volume of grass height complaints.
