Denton Development Code Section 7.7.4 and Code Section 17-40 require property owners to maintain trees so limbs clear streets by 13.5 feet, sidewalks by 7 feet, and alleys by 12 feet. As of January 2025, Section 17-40(k) prohibits blowing tree debris into the street.
Denton Development Code Section 7.7.4 governs tree preservation and maintenance. Property owners are responsible for maintaining street trees adjacent to their property. Tree limbs must provide minimum clearance of 13.5 feet over streets, 7 feet over sidewalks, and 12 feet over alleys. Dead, diseased, or hazardous limbs overhanging public right-of-way must be removed promptly. Section 17-40(k), effective January 1, 2025, explicitly prohibits blowing yard waste including tree trimmings into the street. The city provides curbside brush collection on a rotating schedule; bundled branches up to 4 feet long and 4 inches in diameter are accepted. Large tree trimming projects generating more than the curbside limit should be disposed of at the Denton Landfill or through a licensed tree service. Trimming of protected trees (those meeting caliper thresholds in DDC Section 7.7.4) that significantly alters the canopy may require coordination with the city arborist. The city does not trim trees on private property but will address city-owned trees in parks and right-of-way through the Parks and Recreation Department.
