Denton, TX Landscaping Rules: Artificial Turf (2026)

The City of Denton does not have a specific ordinance addressing artificial turf installation on residential properties. Artificial turf is treated as a landscaping material and is not prohibited by city code. 007 prevents HOAs from mandating natural turf grass or prohibiting water-conserving landscaping alternatives, which Texas courts have interpreted to include artificial turf in appropriate contexts. Artificial turf installations on residential lots do not require a building permit from Denton Development Services unless the project involves significant grading or drainage modification that would trigger stormwater review under Denton Development Code Subchapter 7.

Infill material and drainage substrate must allow adequate stormwater infiltration and must not direct runoff onto neighboring properties. The Denton Development Code imposes impervious cover limits by zoning district; artificial turf with a permeable backing may not count as impervious cover depending on product specifications. In the drought-prone North Texas climate, artificial turf eliminates irrigation demand entirely and is consistent with Dentons water conservation goals. The city does not offer rebates for artificial turf installation.
