In Lincoln and Lancaster County, grass, weeds, or worthless vegetation over six inches above the ground must be cut. Owners get a notice to cut within five days, or the City cuts it and bills them.
Lincoln Municipal Code Chapter 8.46 places the duty to control tall grass and weeds on each property owner, including one-half of abutting streets and alleys. Vegetation may not exceed six inches. The city and Lancaster County jointly run a weed abatement program: an inspector issues a written notice, the owner has five days to cut, and non-compliance lets a contracted service cut it with all costs assessed to the owner. Unincorporated Lancaster County properties are handled by the County Weed Control Authority under a similar standard.
Owners who ignore the five-day notice are billed for City or contractor cutting; unpaid costs are assessed against the property as a lien.
