Mansfield supports native and drought-tolerant landscaping. Texas Property Code 202.007 protects homeowner rights to install xeriscape even in HOA communities, and the city encourages regional water conservation.
The City of Mansfield encourages the use of native and drought-tolerant plants as part of regional water conservation efforts led by the Tarrant Regional Water District. Texas Property Code 202.007 (SB 198, 2013) protects homeowner rights to install drought-resistant landscaping and xeriscape features, and HOAs cannot outright prohibit xeriscape installations though they may enforce reasonable standards for landscape plans and materials. Mansfields landscape ordinance requires minimum planting for new construction and commercial properties but allows native plants to fulfill these requirements. Recommended North Texas natives include Texas sage (cenizo), lantana, gregs mistflower, yaupon holly, Texas persimmon, live oak, cedar elm, and native prairie grasses like little bluestem and buffalo grass. Artificial turf replacing natural lawn is permitted for water conservation. Homeowners who convert traditional turfgrass to water-wise landscapes may qualify for rebates through the regional WaterIsAwesome.com program. The Tarrant County Master Gardeners offer education on native plant selection. Contact Mansfield Parks or Water Utilities for regional landscape resources.
There are no penalties for installing native plant or xeriscape landscaping. HOA restrictions that violate Texas Property Code 202.007 are unenforceable. Commercial landscape plan noncompliance is handled through the development permit process.
