Overland Park, KS Landscaping Rules: Rainwater Harvesting (2026)

The city promotes rain barrel benefits while blending them into a residential setting. Under subsection (a), a façade-mounted barrel must hold approximately 65 gallons or less, be screened from view at grade or blend with the façade and landscaping, sit adjacent to the building envelope, rise no more than 24 inches above grade on a stable non-tipping surface, carry a lid, and prevent odors and mosquito larvae. Subsection (b) allows larger or multiple barrels in the rear or side yard behind the front building line, screened from the right-of-way and adjacent property. The Code Official may approve alternatives. Under K.S.A. 82a-701(c), household use and irrigation of up to two acres is domestic use requiring no state water appropriation permit.
