FL Statute 373.228 expressly authorizes rainwater harvesting and prohibits counties, municipalities, and other local governments from adopting ordinances that prohibit or have the effect of prohibiting the installation of rain barrels or rain harvesting systems on residential properties. Pembroke Pines residents may install rain barrels and cisterns without a city permit. The SFWMD promotes water conservation including rainwater collection. HOA restrictions on rain barrel placement are limited by FL Statute 163.04. Collected rainwater may be used for irrigation and other non-potable purposes. No special permits or fees are required by the city.
