On every permitted watering day, no more than three-fourths of an inch of water may be applied per irrigation zone, and no zone may run more than one hour. Section 74-217 defines "landscape irrigation" broadly to include shrubbery, trees, lawns, ground covers, gardens and public medians, but excludes agricultural crops, nursery stock, cemeteries and golf course turf. Section 74-220 carves out several exceptions that run any day, any time: micro-spray, micro-jet, drip or bubbler systems; newly installed landscape during an initial establishment period; watering-in of chemicals within 24 hours of application, capped at one-fourth inch; system testing and repair up to 20 minutes per zone per hour; and a hand-held hose with an automatic shutoff nozzle. Section 74-219 requires anyone with an automatic system to keep it maintained so it shuts off during periods of adequate rainfall.
