Water restrictions in Yuba City, CA — also called the watering schedule, outdoor irrigation rules, or drought ordinance — set which days and hours you can run sprinklers or irrigation.
Yuba City Public Works permits outdoor landscape irrigation only on Mondays and Thursdays for all residential and commercial accounts, with water-waste prohibitions in effect year-round under the city's Water Shortage Contingency Plan (Stage 1 as of April 18, 2023).
On April 18, 2023 the Yuba City Council moved the Water Shortage Contingency Plan from Stage 3 (Severe Shortage) back to Stage 1 (Water Alert). Under Stage 1 there are no mandatory percentage-reduction targets, but outdoor irrigation is still restricted to Mondays and Thursdays only for every address — both residential and commercial. Prohibited water-waste actions remain in force: irrigating within 48 hours of measurable rainfall; runoff onto sidewalks, gutters, or streets; using a hose without a positive shut-off nozzle; washing down driveways or hard surfaces with potable water; operating a non-recirculating decorative fountain; and failing to repair a known leak. These provisions implement the Yuba City Municipal Code Title 6, Chapter 6 (Water System) and California State Water Resources Control Board emergency regulations (Cal. Code Regs. tit. 23 §§ 980–985). The city operates cellular smart meters and offers the EyeOnWater customer app, plus free sprinkler-timer adjustments through Public Works.
Yuba City Public Works issues warning notices for first observed violations, followed by escalating administrative penalties. Statewide, the State Water Board's water-waste regulations authorize fines up to $500 per day per violation (Cal. Code Regs. tit. 23 §996). Repeat violators can be referred to Code Enforcement and cited under California Government Code §36900 (up to $100 / $200 / $500 for first/second/third infractions within a year). Service can be discontinued for chronic non-compliance under YCMC Title 6, Chapter 6.
