Fire pit rules in Yuba City, CA β also called outdoor burning, recreational fire, or open flame ordinances β cover fuel types, clearances, and when burning is allowed.
Yuba City Municipal Code Title 4, Chapter 5 (Fire Prevention) adopts the California Fire Code. Recreational fires in approved BBQ-type containers are allowed without a permit if the fuel area is 3 feet or less in diameter and 2 feet or less in height, and kept at least 15 feet from any structure or combustible material.
Yuba City adopts the California Fire Code by reference through Title 4, Chapter 5 of the Municipal Code (Fire Prevention). The Yuba City Fire Department defines a permissible recreational fire as 'an outdoor fire burning materials other than rubbish where the fuel being burned is contained in an approved container (BBQ pit, BBQ grill, etc).' The fuel area must be 3 feet or less in diameter and 2 feet or less in height, mirroring CFC Section 307.4.2. Recreational fires shall not be conducted within 15 feet of a structure or combustible material, and conditions that could cause a fire to spread within 15 feet of a structure shall be eliminated prior to ignition. All fires must be constantly attended until extinguished, and fire-extinguishing equipment (hose, extinguisher, etc.) must be immediately available. The Fire Code permits Yuba City Fire Department (YCFD) to require extinguishment if burning creates 'offensive or objectionable smoke or odor.' Yuba City falls within Feather River Air Quality Management District (FRAQMD), which posts daily burn-day status.
Violations of Title 4 Chapter 5 are enforced by YCFD and may be cited as misdemeanors under the California Fire Code (CFC Section 109), with fines up to $1,000 per violation and/or up to six months in county jail. YCFD may order any open burning extinguished. Administrative citations may also be issued under Yuba City Municipal Code Chapter 6, Title 1. Report violations through the YC311 app or (530) 822-4660.
