Yuba City enforces California Fire Code Chapter 61 (Liquefied Petroleum Gases) through YCMC Title 4 Chapter 5. Aggregate LPG capacity over 125 gallons triggers permit and inspection by the Yuba City Fire Department. Tanks must meet CFC Table 6104.3 setbacks (10 ft from buildings/property lines for a 500-gallon tank).
Yuba City adopts the California Fire Code (CFC) by reference under Title 4 Chapter 5 of the Municipal Code. CFC Chapter 61 governs Liquefied Petroleum Gases (LP-gas / propane). Under CFC Section 105.5.30 (operational permit) and CFC Section 105.7.13 (construction permit), an LPG operational permit from the fire code official is required to store, use, or handle LP-gas with an aggregate quantity exceeding 125 gallons. Construction permits are required to install or modify an LP-gas system over the 125-gallon threshold. CFC Table 6104.3 establishes minimum separation distances by container capacity: a 125-500 gallon aboveground container must be at least 10 feet from buildings, lot lines of adjoining property that may be built upon, and public ways; 501-2,000 gallons require 25 feet; over 2,000 gallons require 50 feet. CFC Section 6109 limits portable cylinders stored at one- and two-family dwellings to a 20-pound water capacity per cylinder and an aggregate 40 pounds per single-family dwelling; storage shall not be inside dwellings (CFC Section 6109.4). Yuba City retains a longstanding local amendment requiring fire protection in commercial buildings 3,600 sq ft or larger, which intersects propane storage at commercial sites.
Violations of CFC Chapter 61 are enforced by the Yuba City Fire Department through CFC Section 109. Operating without a required permit, exceeding container limits, or violating setbacks is a misdemeanor punishable by fines up to $1,000 and/or up to six months in county jail per offense. The fire code official may order immediate removal or relocation of non-compliant LP-gas containers (CFC Section 6101.4). Repeated violations may also be subject to YCMC Chapter 6, Title 1 administrative fines.
