Yuba City, CA Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

Sec. 2 to set the City's storage limit for liquefied petroleum gas at 2,000 gallons; above that aggregate, whether in one tank or several, a facility falls outside what the Fire Code allows within Yuba City limits. Facilities that already held more than 2,000 gallons before the amendment took effect keep the right to continue that use, but only until the tanks sit idle for 90 consecutive days, at which point the nonconforming use lapses. Existing over-limit facilities also cannot expand, except for modifications required to bring the site into compliance with safety regulations; no other growth of an existing facility above the cap is allowed anywhere in the City.

The same set of Fire Code amendments addresses related hazardous storage: Section 5604 prohibits the manufacture of explosives and the storage of explosives or blasting agents anywhere within City limits, with a narrow exception for small arms ammunition, primers, smokeless powder, and black sporting powder that meet Title 19 of the California Code of Regulations, and the Fire Chief or Fire Marshal can further limit the quantity of explosive material allowed at any location. 4, except in A, AH, M-1, M-2, C-3, and CM zones, where individual and aggregate tank capacity is capped at 15,000 gallons per parcel and tanks must be protected by concrete-filled steel posts and anchored against flotation in a flood.
