Burbank, CA Landscaping Rules: Weed Ordinances (2026)

Burbank's code does not set a specific maximum lawn height for private front/back yards; the city states that lawns need not be mowed at set intervals, but dead or overgrown vegetation is a code violation. Two provisions create concrete height/condition limits: (1) BMC 7-4-110(B) makes it unlawful 'to plant or maintain shrubbery, ground cover, or other plants within the City's parkways, whose growth is in excess of eight inches (8") in height above the top of the nearest curb,' with the same 8-inch limit applied to plants within 40 feet of an intersection under 7-4-110(C); and (2) the weed-abatement ordinance, BMC 4-2-207, declares 'dry grass, stubble, brush, or other flammable material which endangers the public safety by creating a fire hazard,' and vegetation overgrowing curblines, to be public nuisances that owners must abate. Property owners must 'at all times maintain the premises free of weeds' (BMC 4-2-208).
