Fort Wayne prohibits rank vegetation and noxious weeds over 9 inches on improved lots. The city follows IC 15-16-8 and enforces with a 10-day notice and city abatement.
Fort Wayne Code addresses weeds in combination with grass height through its rank vegetation ordinance. The city prohibits the growth of ragweed, poison ivy, Canada thistle, Johnson grass, and other state-listed noxious weeds (IC 15-16-8) as well as any rank weed or grass exceeding 9 inches. Complaints can be filed with Neighborhood Code Compliance. Standard enforcement is a 10-day compliance notice followed by city-contracted abatement if the owner does not respond. Costs are billed to the owner and become a property tax lien if unpaid. Vacant lots and foreclosed properties receive additional scrutiny during the May through September peak season. Native-plant and pollinator gardens can be registered with the city to avoid misidentification as weedy neglect.
$100 to $300 per abatement cycle in mowing and administrative fees, billed via property tax.
