Fort Wayne, IN Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

Sections 72.01 and 72.22 of Chapter 72 of the Fort Wayne Code of Ordinances set the baseline for curbside parking. Section 72.01 says no vehicle shall be stopped, standing, or parked in a roadway other than parallel with the edge of the roadway and headed in the direction of a lawful traffic movement. On a Fort Wayne street that means the car sits alongside the curb, within 12 inches of it, pointing the same way traffic moves on that side. Crossing over to take a space on the opposite curb, nose toward oncoming traffic, breaks the rule even when the space itself is legal. The only exception written into the quoted text is a stop that is necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic. Because the section names stopping and standing along with parking, a driver who stays in the car is still covered.

Section 72.22 lists more than 20 specific no-parking zones. Subsection (B) closes off the space within five feet of a public or private driveway and/or alley. The wording reaches private driveways as well as public ones, so it applies to the driveway of your own house just as it does to a neighbor's. Alleys get the same five-foot buffer. Other zones on the list include the area within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, the inside of an intersection, and sidewalks.
