Fort Wayne follows IC 9-22-1 for abandoned vehicle handling. Vehicles inoperable, unregistered, or parked more than 72 hours on public streets can be tagged and towed. On private property, vehicles must be operable and registered or stored inside a structure.
Under Indiana Code 9-22-1 and Fort Wayne Chapter 72, abandoned vehicles on public streets are tagged for 72 hours before tow to the city impound lot. On private residential property, the UDO prohibits storing inoperable vehicles (flat tires, missing parts, expired registration over 30 days) in open view. Vehicles must be operable and display current Indiana plates, or be stored inside a fully enclosed garage or structure. Complaints go to Neighborhood Code Compliance (260-427-1397). Owners receive 10 days notice to remove or operate before city-initiated abatement. Impound fees at city lot: 125 dollar tow plus 25 dollars per day storage. Unclaimed vehicles auctioned after 30 days.
Private property: 50-250 dollar fine plus tow. Impound recovery: approximately 200-400 dollars after storage.
