Citrus County, FL Landscaping Rules: Weed Ordinances (2026)

Article VI of Chapter 20 finds that excessive vegetation growth breeds snakes, rats and mosquitoes, creates fire hazards, hurts neighboring property values, and can obstruct sightlines at road intersections and rights-of-way, declaring such conditions a public nuisance. Section 20-61 sets the operative rule: it is unlawful for anyone owning, leasing, occupying or controlling covered property to permit or maintain grass, weeds, brush or undergrowth over 18 inches in height, or to let vegetative matter accumulate. Section 20-62 defines which properties the rule reaches: residential lots in recorded or unrecorded subdivisions, lots in public/semi-public, professional service, commercial, industrial or recreational zoning districts, agricultural or rural residential lots of one acre or less, and any other unzoned-agricultural tract where the excess growth lies within 100 feet of improved property.

The section exempts land that qualifies as naturally vegetated, meaning it has not been cleared or mowed in the five years before a complaint is filed. 12, with notice served by certified mail, publication or posting.
