Spokane property owners must control noxious weeds listed by the Spokane County Noxious Weed Control Board under RCW 17.10. Class A and B designate weeds require eradication. Complaints enforced by county and city code.
Washington State RCW 17.10 requires property owners to prevent the spread of state-listed noxious weeds. The Spokane County Noxious Weed Control Board maintains an annual weed list with Class A (eradication required), Class B (control required), and Class C (containment encouraged) designations. Common Spokane-area problem weeds include knapweed (diffuse and spotted), leafy spurge, rush skeletonweed, yellow starthistle, and common tansy. The Weed Board inspects properties after complaints, issues control orders, and can enter property to abate at owner expense if uncorrected. Spokane city code enforcement under SMC 10.08 also addresses general rank weed growth. Herbicide use near Spokane River, Latah Creek, and Hangman Creek must follow Ecology aquatic herbicide rules.
Class A violations: mandatory eradication, fines up to $1,000 per day. County abatement billed to owner with liens for unpaid costs. Repeat violations escalate.
