Akron, OH Mobility & Curb Rules: Bike Lane Rules (2026)

Akron's general parking-prohibitions section, § 76.15, lists nineteen places where a vehicle cannot stand or park, and subsection S is the one that reaches bicycle lanes specifically. It bars parking or standing in any fire lane, high-occupancy vehicle lane, bicycle lane, bus-only lane, taxi-only lane, high-rail-transit-only lane, or any other type of preferential lane as defined by the Ohio Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices Chapter 3, the same statewide manual that governs how Akron's Traffic Engineer designates and signs those lanes. The prohibition applies regardless of how briefly a driver intends to stop; the only exceptions built into § 76.15's opening clause are stopping to avoid a conflict with other traffic, complying with another provision of the Traffic Code, or obeying the direction of a police officer or a traffic-control device.

Because bicycle lanes in Akron are marked and striped by the Traffic Engineer under the same authority that designates loading zones and no-parking zones elsewhere in Chapter 76, a driver who parks, double-parks, or idles in a marked bike lane is committing the same type of parking infraction as one who parks in a fire lane or bus lane. There is no separate bicycle-specific citation code; officers write the violation under § 76.15(S) itself. The rule does not address bicyclists' own conduct in the lane, only what motor vehicles cannot do inside it.
